Priority topics

As expected, all important aspects of POF applications were presented. Topics ran from new fibers and polymer structures, broadband technologies, industrial-, automotive- and aerospace applications, data transmission, active and passive components, lighting, micro structured fibers, standardization and modulation formats to fiber optic sensors.

The main thematic priorities were similar to the last years. Following the end of the two large EU projects, POF-PLUS and POF-ALL, a slight reduction of the contributions in the field of data communication was observed. Nevertheless, many interesting topics regarding data transmission were presented.

The POF-AC showed an investigation of possible modulation formats for future applications at data rates of 10 Gbit/s over 1 mm diameter PMMA POF and further progress in data communication with powerful green LEDs. In addition, a 100 Mbit/s optical slip ring based on fluorescent fibers was presented.

KD -POF introduced a commercial 1 Gbit/s chip that supports a transmission length up to 50 m SI-POF with LED technology. Furthermore, the University Hartz showed first results of a WDM transmission setup based on four different wavelengths.

Keio University presented a 120 Gbit/s system for future 8k ultra-high resolution TV based on thin graded-index POF. To improve the coupling efficiency of the 12 polymer fibers (12 x 10 Gbit/s) a spherical lens was crimped to each fiber according to the principle of a ballpoint pen.

However, a key area of the POF conference was optical sensors. The University of Rio de Janeiro presented an optical fiber sensor based on refractometry which allows determining the bacteria concentration in a solution. Other fiber optic sensors for structural health monitoring and temperature measurements were shown too.

The POF -AC also presented an overview on power transmission over optical fibers. Among other things, different concepts for power transmission (using transformers, DC-DC converters or photodiodes having a larger band gap) were examined.
